ITINERARY 5- Challenging
A side hike to Philmont's towering Baldy Mountain, 12,441', falls exactly in the middle of this itinerary. Prior to that experience, your crew will enjoy archeology, western lore, boot branding and a chuck wagon dinner and breakfast. Lead a burro to the Continental Tie & Lumber Company where you will relive the old logging days and enjoy the "Company Meeting" Campfire. Visit Miranda's mountain men rendezvous during your two day layover at Ute Meadows. Challenge events, rock climbing and shotgun
shooting and reloading round out this popular itinerary.

Reminders:
1.) Get your Philmont 2008 Physical complete.  It must be done on the required form.  I have a couple, that I'll bring Monday, but need you to find the one I gave you first. Make two copies for yourself and Mr. Smith
2.) Break in your shoes
3.) Do some walking, or other physical activity consistently.
4.) Everyone needs a personal First Aid Kit
5.) Everyone needs a couple garbage bags and extra ziplocks for covering packs and transporting garbage
6.) Everyone needs a hat and pair of sunglasses
7.) Everyone needs to keeping walking and continuing your train up.

Upcoming Training Events: Try to attend all training camps for the shakedowns and practice. Try to get hold of a pack, boots and hiking socks/liners, lightweight sleeping bag, and non- cotton, lightweight clothing. Weight is key.

Overview:

Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America's premier high-adventure base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 200 square miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.

Born in 1938 as Philturn Rockymountain Scoutcamp, today's Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training.

More than 860,000 Scouts, Venturers, and leaders have experienced the adventure of Philmont since the first camping season in 1939. Throughout its existence, conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques have helped maintain the ranch's wilderness flavor.

Program:

Crews hike Philmont's mountains, spending nights at various backcountry camps. At staffed camps, crews can participate in a variety of programs presented by Philmont backcountry staff. Among these programs are horseback riding, burro packing, gold panning, rock climbing, .30-06 rifle shooting, archaeology, mountain biking, and interpretive programs such as homesteading and mountain man rendezvous.

Each expedition follows one of 35 itineraries, which are carefully planned and developed to avoid overcrowding and to enhance each crew's wilderness experience. Itineraries vary in their difficulty and in the program features each offers.
